Tabletop Tuesday: Make Your Own Dessert Course

By Libbie Summers

Move your guests to a new location after dinner and set the table with everything they need to create their own dessert. It doesn’t have to be too fancy, but it does have to be showy. After all, this is the last thing your guests will remember from the meal and God knows you want them to remember something fantastic and fun. At the risk of edging a little to close to Sandra Lee, I did a Chocolate Covered Donut Course resplendent with caramel and popcorn to add on top. Just to push it over the edge…there was chocolate milk.

I let the moodiness of the donut inform the table. Dark and rich. Black table top, gray linen napkins and the most fabulous pewter stoneware from Juliska. All very dramatic against a playful dessert!

Here’s where I Leeted (aka cheated)…I bought the donuts! And damn it, they were delicious! I made my own caramel sauce, and of course popped my own popcorn. A small wooden bowl of Maldon flake salt was on the side, actually it’s always on the side. Dessert was that easy!
